Chapter Nine

I crouched silently at the right side of the balcony doors, waiting for the sun to sink and evening to begin. I glanced across at Sion on the other side, also waiting in the shadows. I welcomed the relief of the oncoming night, and gathered my strength and thoughts.

I was pretty sure our plan would work. It had to. Instead of plotting and planning, we had spent the remaining hours of the day sleeping. Sion and I were a good team. Brains and brawn; that was us. We’d fought together so many times, it was almost as if we were one force. But back then, I was more reckless, with nothing to lose. There was a lot at stake now. I was not only a husband and father, but I was responsible for thousands of Mani—and they knew nothing about this threat that we were facing. It was all up to me to make things right again.

The sun was almost gone, I could feel it. But we stayed in the shadows. My anticipation was growing. Although there was the possibility the scum was dead, I somehow knew he’d be back with a vengeance, waiting on the other side of the shutters to attack us again like a bad rerun. He was probably tired and hungry too, which would only fuel that generally bad mood he seemed to always be in.

Dusk. As soon as it came, so did he. I felt his presence rise in the air as he approached the castle and hovered outside above the balcony. It was annoying how he appeared so abruptly. I had that talent, almost all Mani did, but this creature seemed like he’d had centuries of practice.

“I was hoping you’d met the sun and been burnt to a crisp, or something,” I called out.

He chuckled wickedly. “Not I.”

“Well, you want to play again? I’m a lot stronger than you, if you haven’t noticed by now.”

“Physical strength is a minor thing. You do not possess the wisdom that I do. If you did, you would relent.”

“Never,” I answered.

Sion was waiting for the signal, and I took a deep breath. We had a long night ahead of us and it was now or never. I moved in front of the shutters and positioned myself at the center where they would begin to part. I gave just the slightest nod, and as soon as the sensor beeped and the shutters began to open, we both flew out and up over the balcony. The old vampire rose up with us, and we formed a triangle. The stars were already beginning to appear.

“So, we’re just going to do this again, right? Fight it out? I already explained to you that you blew it big time.” I gave an overdramatic sigh, and took my fighting stance, floating further above the ground and Sion did likewise, giving us a little distance. I wanted plenty of room. My pockets were bulging with rocks—the only projectiles I could get my hands on. From here, I would have to play it by ear.
